Since the object of biotechnology is life on earth, it is closely related to food, energy, medical health, pharmacy and the improvement of environment. Biotechnology is a future-oriented, high-tech science technology field, demonstrating three characteristics: it furthers the development of new technologies, it creates value and it reduces pollution and its causes. Recently, due to a broader understanding of genetics, bio-chemistry and molecular biology, its application range has been expanded to new material production such as medical and chemical substances including anti-bacteria. In particular, genetic engineering, a field of bio-technology, is leading a third industrial revolution, presenting limitless possibilities for improvements to the functioning of organisms. As a field of study, it is rising in its position as a high-tech science, greatly improving the lives of human-beings and their overall welfare.

The Institute, in liaison with relevant research institutes on and off campus, was established for the purpose of contributing to the development of industries by pursuing joint research activities with Korean companies. It also aims to foster high-quality human resources required for research in this field, by acquiring cutting-edge technologies from advanced countries through international academic exchanges.

Research Projects Undertaken:
Development of crops resistant to multiple threats, using an insect-and-pest-resistant induction mechanism
Development of a stress signal transmitting control mechanism
Establishment of a central training center and management project for fostering bioresource specialists
Establishment of a new materials development center for the creation of functional foods
Clarification of the origin of the diverse organisms to be found on the Korean peninsula
Research on EMT signal regulating mechanisms
Research on molecule screening techniques for verification and establishment of organspecific toxicity
Establishment of a gene bank and tree barcode (TreeBOL) for northeast Asian woody plants
Precise research on the actual condition of endangered and rare invertebrate animals on the Korean peninsula and the development of conservation status evaluation techniques
Investigating, securing, and uncovering substances that will potentially animate future growth
